My name is Tom Cowan. I am an independent, freelance web developer in Lansing, Michigan, USA.
I typically work with small business owners who wish to establish of improve their online presence but who cannot afford the high rates charged by most web development firms.
My experience in web development along with the low operating costs of being a freelancer allow me to provide high quality, professional results while keeping within the limited budget of a small business. As an independent developer I can also provide a more personal level of service than you would get from an agency.
I am also open to assisting with special projects if it is something interesting. If you are a start-up or have an idea for something new, feel free to contact me. I am also open to donating my time to charities and non-profit organizations.
I have a broad range of experience in several fields including web design and development, software development, electronics, communications and logistics.
I have enough experience with Wordpress to know that I absolutely hate the platform and want nothing more to do with it. I prefer, and specialize in, building "real" websites and designing my own custom content management systems.
If you have any questions about my services, please feel free to contact me.
I Guarantee to Provide A High Quality Effective Design Solution at An Affordable Price
My pricing is very reasonable with the average business site costing less than $1000.00.
Every website design project is different and there is no one-size-fits-all solution, but most websites fit into one of these three categories. I will tailor a solution to fit the unique needs of your business.
Note that supplying the site content such as text, images, product prices and descriptions is the responsibility of the client. Development times are dependent on the client getting necessary materials to me in a timely manner.
A brochure type website does not use a database and is intended for information that will not change very often. They can be a single page or multiple pages depending on the amount of information you need to display.
They are a good choice for business owners who only need to display basic information about the business or whose product line, prices and descriptions do not change often and are not sold directly through the website, such as a restaurant or service related business.
Database driven sites are the best choice for anyone who needs to be able to add or update the information displayed on the site on a regular basis. Examples include blogs, artist galleries and retail businesses who need to update their product information often.
Site content is stored in a database and is retrieved and displayed only when needed. These sites incorporate a password protected administration area that the owner can log into and update the information displayed on the site whenever and as often as needed.
Ecommerce websites incorporate all the features of database driven sites and also include linking to a payment processor such as PayPal to collect payments. Once PayPal has successfully processed the payment they will return a confirmation to the site.
Order and customer details are then stored in the database so the business can complete order fulfillment processes such as packing and shipping.
Typically, ecommerce sites also provide for regular customers to create an account where they can store their shipping information, view their order status and history, and print receipts.
Below is a small sample of the sites I have developed.
A few of the more advanced projects I have been involved with I cannot show here due to agreements with the clients.
Site Type: One Page Database Driven Site
Delivery Time: About 3 Weeks
K&K Trucking needed a new site to provide basic company information and display their landscaping products. Their business is seasonal so they needed the ability to update the availability and pricing of their products, as well as their business hours throughout the year.
All product information and business details are pulled from a database and I created a custom content management system that allows them to update this information themselves as needed. I also programmed a Materials Calculator that customers can use to calculate the amount of material needed for their project.
Site Type: 6 Page Database Driven Blog
Delivery Time: About 3 Weeks
This is a custom, Non-Wordpress blog. One thing I don't like about Wordpress are the security issues. I custom code everything from the ground up incorporating the latest security measures to prevent hacking. If the site is coded correctly the first time you don't need to constantly update the source code to keep it secure.
The blog posts, post reader comments, books for sale and other information on this site are pulled from a database and I created a custom back end and content management system to manage the entire site.
The site also incorporates Amazon Merchant Account Integration to sell books. The books are added to the site from the CMS in the same manner as the blog posts.
Site Type: 15 Page Database Driven Ecommerce Site with Blog
Delivery Time: About 4 Weeks
MoonGlow Software produces software primarily geared for college students. A website was needed to not only display the products, but to provide a method of delivering them to the customer.
The site features separate product pages for three different programs. There is also a download page and pages for screen-shots and video demonstrations for each program. Trial versions of the software can be downloaded from the site, and the site is integrated with a payment processor to handle on-site sales along with a script to automatically generate license keys.
Site Type: One Page Brochure Site

The website provides information about the restaurant, showcases the menu, and provides location, business hours and contact information.
I created the site, the layout of the menu sections and chose appropriate stock photography for the background images. The site also has a contact form and Google map.
Site Type: Four Page Brochure Site

Note: Frankfort Driving Academy does not actually exist. I built this site to demonstrate a site design concept that could be used for any service related business. If you own a driving school or any other type of business that could use this design, I can re-brand it for you at a discount. Please contact me for more information.
The website provides information about the training and testing the school provides, their class schedule, and location and contact information.
